			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>There is No &#8220;Magic Potion&#8221; When It Comes to Health and Longevity<br />

<p>It does seem, doesn&#8217;t it, that it doesn&#8217;t matter where we turn these days, there are news stories and advertisements, alike, promoting the stupendous studies on a plethora of natural supplements, not to mention the cutting-edge health claims of coffee and red wine that, indubitably, promise to reduce or eliminate all causes of mortality? It would almost seem, in fact, that a quest for immortality has replaced our search for longevity!</p>
<p>To begin with, let me make it super clear that I unwaveringly believe that certain~particular things that we put into our bodies can be beneficial to our health. Therefore, I&#8217;m definitely not against taking supplements. Not only do I recommend them to my patients, but I listen to my own advice and take them as well. Secondly, if confession is good for the soul, and red wine is good for the heart, then I&#8217;d like to take this opportunity to help both by stating for the record that I appreciate drinking a glass of red wine. The suggestion that it might have heart-healthy properties, well, that&#8217;s like icing on the cake, so to speak. And, lastly, as far as caffeine&#8217;s ability to actually reverse or prevent Alzheimer&#8217;s disease goes, I believe that if that were generally true, life would be far less frightening and far more enjoyable for many people and their families.</p>
<p>Let&#8217;s take a deep breath and reflect on a couple of facts, however, before deciding to add more caffeine to your morning grind, increase the red wine you may drink in the evening, or before you consider mortgaging the house in order to pay for high-priced minerals and herbs that promise to extend your life indefinitely.</p>
<p>Let us think about the fact, for instance, that we have not been locked up in a cage all of our life, and not one of us has been induced, by unnatural means, to acquire the age-related diseases that lab animals do, enfeeblement that is then &#8220;reversed&#8221; by resveratrol, caffeine, or some exotic mineral or plant. We are dynamic, biological beings, free to fully engage with life.</p>
<p>Fundamentally, we are far more than the sum total of our parts. We are dynamic and biological, not &#8220;mechanical, conscienceless devices.&#8221; We are organically individual, i.e., we react in a uniquely individual ways to internal irritation factors and external environmental influences. Case in point, though smoking cigarettes is commonly unhealthy, there are a few people who are able to smoke, so it seems, and live to a ripe old age without any apparently-related problems.</p>
<p>The outcomes upon which scientific research and testing are rely upon the isolation of a particular variable. That is the method that gives scientific inquiry its legitimacy. However, because tests related to human health issues occur through this very method, and are most often done on lab animals, when it comes to human beings, the effects are very likely to be quite different. In fact, to paraphrase Abraham Lincoln, what might benefit some of the people all of the time, most likely won&#8217;t work for all of the people all of the time (and sometimes won&#8217;t work at all!).</p>
<p>Everyday you make considerable choices that affect both your health and longevity. Decisions such as what you&#8217;ll eat and how much exercise and rest you&#8217;ll get will either be good for you, or not so good. Obviously, your unhealthy choices are not beneficial for your long-term health. And, even though you know, by the way your individual body responds to certain things, you may often ignore these important health messages.</p>
<p>Then, a report comes out asserting that researchers have finally found the &#8220;missing link&#8221; between we, humans, and immortality, that they&#8217;ve uncovered, in fact, THE THING that has the amazing power to reverse all of the overindulgent and unhealthy things you may have been doing to your body on a daily basis, and you, like many others, may want to jump on the bandwagon. Talk about &#8220;magical&#8221; thinking!</p>
<p>The human body is an exquisitely involved, homeostatic system. That is to say, every function is interdependent and sensitively balanced. This meticulous system becomes &#8220;off balance&#8221; when you consistently make unhealthy choices. Over time, the imbalances produce diseases and speed up the aging process.</p>
<p>As a chiropractor, I advise that you supplement if you need it. Pour that added cup of coffee if it feels right. And, have a little more red wine if it genuinely feels beneficial for your individual system. But all the while remember, the only truly reliable way that we, humans, can avoid or reverse age-related health issues is by changing our unhealthy lifestyle. Good health has nothing do with luck. And, there is no &#8220;magic potion&#8221; when it comes to health and longevity.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Just the other day I found an article on sciencedaily.com how caffeine decreased memory loss in aged mice raised to develop symptoms of Alzheimer&#8217;s disease. The article began with the <em>angle</em> that &#8220;Coffee drinkers may have another reason to pour that extra cup.&#8221;  It continued by reporting on coterminous studies published online July 6 in the <em>Journal of Alzheimer&#8217;s Disease</em> that showed that caffeine notably decreased abnormal levels of the protein linked to Alzheimer&#8217;s disease, both in the brains and in the blood of mice exhibiting symptoms of the disease.</p>
<p>But, before you opt to add another cup of coffee to your daily intake, let me warn you that also on the website, under &#8220;Related Stories,&#8221; were a couple of articles regarding studies that demonstrated the negative effects of caffeine, &#8220;Morning Jolt of Caffeine May Mask Serious Sleep Problems,&#8221; and &#8220;Coffee Consumption Linked To Increased Risk Of Heart Attack For Persons With Certain Gene Variation.&#8221;</p>
<p>Nearly any viewpoint, I&#8217;ve noticed, particularly when it comes to health and longevity, can be corroborated, or at least bolstered, by a number of specific studies. The &#8220;good/bad&#8221; studies related to caffeine certainly aren&#8217;t, by any means, the only ones. Nonetheless, it did get me to pondering about the reasonableness that there will never be simply &#8220;one thing&#8221; that will absolutely help we, humans, to live longer, healthier lives. Humans are dynamic, biological beings. We aren&#8217;t raised in unnatural confinement We are free to participate in life. And, let&#8217;s face it, though Alzheimer&#8217;s disease is likely on the rise, obviously none of us has been &#8220;bred to develop symptoms of Alzheimer&#8217;s disease,&#8221; so caffeine isn&#8217;t entirely the &#8220;one thing&#8221; that is going to prevent or reverse it.</p>
<p>Our body is an elegant, complex system that is based on homeostasis, i.e, balance. Consequently good health is about a healthy, balanced approach to living, as opposed to our being momentarily convinced by the latest health study and &#8220;doing&#8221; or &#8220;overdoing&#8221; one particular thing under the illusion that it will reverse all of the other immoderate and harmful things we have done to our bodies.</p>
<p>As a doctor of chiropractic, I believe that every moment of the day we have an opportunity to make healthy choices for our body, to decide what will assist us to live longer, healthier lives. We know what genuinely &#8220;feels&#8221; life enriching and what doesn&#8217;t when it comes to what is good for our body. So, the next time you reach for that extra cup of coffee or that second glass of red wine, I hope that you&#8217;ll think about this. There is no &#8220;one thing&#8221; that will do &#8220;everything&#8221; for your good health.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Chiropractors, like me, agree that &#8220;motion is life.&#8221; We, humans, were designed to walk, to run, to dance, and to move all the muscles of our body for our entire lifespan. So, naturally, it follows that we either &#8220;move it or lose it!&#8221; Our aging &#8220;Baby Boomer&#8221; population is discovering just how true this cautionary advice is when it comes to energy, vitality, mobility, and good health in later years. With every year of our life, we have much to gain from being physically active&#8230;and plenty to lose by living an immobile or sedentary lifestyle.</p>
<p>As our age-related risks of chronic disease<em> increase</em>, regular physical activity can actually slow down the trend. In addition, research has shown that people who have already developed coronary artery disease, osteoarthritis, high blood pressure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), Type 2 diabetes, and other age-related chronic diseases can benefit substantially by increasing their physical activity and, therefore, often can manage their chronic illness with fewer medicines.</p>
<p>Furthermore, some studies suggest that the cardiovascular benefits an individual gets from physical activity may also help the brain stay healthy. &#8220;<span class="Normal">Physical activity influences the frontal region of the brain,&#8221; says Dr. Bradley Hatfield, professor of Sports Psychology at the University of Maryland, College Park. </span><span class="Normal">So, if you&#8217;ve been wondering what the best thing is that you can do to keep your brain young, the answer may be for you to take a long walk. </span><span class="Normal">A key factor is that exercise thickens the brain tissue and builds more synapses in the brain.  The brain has 10 billion nerve cells, called neurons, and on average, neurons are connected to each other through 10,000 synapses.  Every time we exercise, more synapses form and the active brain gets stronger.</span></p>
<p>On a regular basis, being physically active increases the quality of life (period). Some of the benefits include improved energy levels, mental sharpness, balance, strength, flexibility, and weight control. Moreover, regular aerobic exericise has been shown to help in the management of depression, anxiety, and stress.</p>
<p>So, even though the facts point conclusively to the validity of the &#8220;move it or lose it!&#8221; warning, they also confirm that it is never to late for you to &#8220;move it&#8221; and regain your health!</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>You may have read on this website, or elsewhere, about recent studies that have shown that physical activity is requisite to getting and staying healthy, especially as we age. But, if you&#8217;ve been inactive for awhile, even the <em>idea </em>of <strong>exercise</strong> might seem &#8220;exhausting.&#8221; The best way, then, to approach this much-needed addition to your lifestyle is, literally and figuratively, to do it one step at a time. A smart &#8220;first step&#8221; is to see a health care professional, like your chiropractor, for a full physical examination. Once it is confirmed that you won&#8217;t make matters worse through movement, then the next step is simply to start moving a bit each day.</p>
<p><em>Any </em>movement is a step towards better health and <strong>physical fitness</strong>. Walk a lap (or two) around your house or apartment. Put that TV remote away and get up to change the channels. As your body becomes accustomed to moving again, you will probably discover that you actually <em>want </em>to move more. Then you can slowly add additional movement to your daily routine. Increase the walk around your house to a walk around the block, a walk in the park, or even a walk through the shopping mall. Walking with a friend can often help to keep you on track(especially on those days when you&#8217;d rather sit and veg, then get your body moving). If you are physically able, take the stairs instead of using the elevator as often as you can. Park farther away from the entrance to the supermarket and make it a goal to put more and more parking spots between you and the entrance.</p>
<p>After a few weeks of regular physical activity, you will begin to feel the healthful benefits of movement. Then you&#8217;ll be ready for new ways to build flexibility, fitness, and muscle strength. Your chiropractor can advise you on how to become more physically active and help you to development an individualized program.</p>
